The original and only authorized edition of the famous 78-card tarot deck designed by Pamela Colman Smith under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite in 1910.
Our most classic deck, the Rider Waite tarot cards feature simple images with backgrounds and details abundant in symbolism. Whilst some imagery in this deck remains very similar to that found in more historic examples, there are some considerable differences and changes. Some christian inspired symbolism was removed from the cards (for for example, the Pope became the Hierophant and the Papess became the High Priestess) whilst in other cards christian symbolism was added in. This can be found in the ‘Lovers’ card, which changed from a medieval design to a naked depiction of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
